Haylon Technologies Receives DOE Funding for Pilot of Innovative Residential Second-Life ESS Systems
Aug 7, 2023
Haylon Technologies was selected for a portion of a $1.1 million award from the Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy to develop advanced technologies and retrofit practices for buildings that will benefit occupants and the grid through efficient, affordable, sustainable, and resilient building operation. Advancements made with this funding from the Buildings Energy Efficiency Frontiers & Innovation Technologies (BENEFIT) funding opportunity will help buildings electrify while improving their energy efficiency and demand flexibility in a cost-effective and equitable manner.
For this project, Haylon Technologies partnered with Blip Energy, the developer of a low-cost IoT battery energy storage (BESS) system that uses second-life cells. 40 units will be deployed across the Midwest through Blip Energy's utility partners. Haylon's role in the project is developing a chemistry-agnostic battery management system for a power system that employs second-life batteries as backup for 120-V devices, furthering circular economy goals.
